An introduction to The st. johns river in Jacksonville, Florida
The St. Johns River...
The following map shows how far the watershed extends from the river itself:
- is 310 miles long.
- flows north from St. Johns Marsh just west of Vero Beach and ends in the Atlantic Ocean at Mayport.
- has a gradient (or elevation) of only 27 feet, which means it drops approximately 1 inch for every mile.
- is naturally tea colored as a result of tannins from the oak leaves that fall from the many oak trees that line the river.
The following map shows how far the watershed extends from the river itself:

This website was created by the LaVilla School of the Arts Global Scholars classes as a way to introduce our global community to our local waterway. The three Global Scholars classes in the Compass & Discovery Collaborations divided up the research & worked as a whole team to put together this website.
The St. Johns River is an incredibly important part of our city & this website will explain the history, culture, & economic impact of our river as well as the challenges facing our river & what we can all do to protect the St. Johns River. In addition, we have included a section for Art Connections because LaVilla is a performing arts school for middle school students in grades 6-8! We hope that you have fun exploring our website & learning about our amazing waterway! Click on the tabs at the top of this page to navigate to the different pages of the website.

As part of our research putting this website together we had Ms. Emily Floore, Education Director for the St. Johns Riverkeeper, come to our classes to give a presentation & teach us about water sampling. Students completed the following seven water tests on St. Johns River water to learn more about the health of our river:
